Buying a Used Audi A4 or Q5

Looking at a used A4 or Q5? Identify the engine and transmission, compare invoices with the correct service schedule, and write down what you notice during a viewing and test drive.

What should you confirm before viewing?

Get the VIN, year, trim, engine, drivetrain, transmission, mileage, and listing. A4 and Q5 models come in different configurations, so those details matter when you check maintenance. Request invoices, and note any modifications or major repairs the seller reports.

Check the VIN with NHTSA’s recall tool and Audi’s recall and service campaign resources. Ask for paperwork on completed work. A lookup can show open recalls, but it is not the car’s full repair history.

How do you review the records?

Look for itemized invoices with dates, mileage, the shop, and the work performed. Compare them with the odometer and put them in order. Mark seller-reported work that has no paperwork; a general service stamp may not identify which fluid or part was changed.

Use Audi’s maintenance resource to find the schedule for the exact VIN or year, model, and trim. Audi’s service page also uses mileage to refine recommendations. An interval for another A4 or Q5 may not apply to this car.

What can you observe at the car?

If possible, arrange to see the car before it has been started. Notice the initial idle, unusual sounds or smells, smoke, and warning lights. Write down anything that stands out and ask the seller about it.

In good light, look over the body for damage or repairs you want explained. Check the glass, lamps, tires, and features you care about, such as windows, seats, climate controls, and infotainment.

If the seller allows a test drive, take a familiar route. Notice how the engine and transmission respond, how the brakes feel, and whether the steering or suspension makes an unusual sound. If the car behaves unexpectedly, stop safely and tell the seller what happened.

What should you ask an inspection shop?

Give the shop the VIN, listing, records, and your notes. Find out whether its PPI can include a scan, lift inspection, or road test under the seller’s access rules. The report should name the car’s make, model, and VIN, and separate what the shop observed from what needs more testing.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends an independent inspection even for a dealer-sold vehicle with a warranty. A vehicle-history report does not replace it; see the FTC’s used-car advice. These questions can help keep the conversation focused:

  • Do the invoices identify this car and match its mileage?
  • Are there warning lights or diagnostic findings to explain?
  • What scheduled work is due or undocumented for this configuration?
  • Which concern needs more testing beyond the agreed PPI?
  • Can the seller complete any promised repair and provide an invoice?

A short checklist to take with you

Use Print this guide to bring these notes to a viewing or inspection:

  • Vehicle: year, model, VIN, mileage, engine, and transmission.
  • Records received: invoices, service history, and completed recall paperwork.
  • Seller’s claims to verify: repairs, maintenance, or modifications.
  • Your observations: warning lights, sounds, leaks, and items to demonstrate.
  • Questions for the shop: agreed scope, quote, access, and follow-up tests.

Leave space beside each item for what you learn. The checklist organizes questions; the inspection and records provide the evidence.

What should you do before making an offer?

After the viewing or inspection, compare what you learned with the seller’s claims and the invoices. Get an estimate for work that needs one, and decide what you still need to know. If the seller will not permit an independent inspection, weigh that loss of information before buying.

To arrange an inspection, send Euro Spec Motoring the listing, VIN, seller location, timing, and concerns through the pre-purchase inspection request. For related questions, see how to assess missing Audi records and what to ask about oil consumption.
